Red face Starting problems

Hi everyone!

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

I have a starting problem with my 79 F150 4X4. It seams that after a long drive (engine completely warmed up) I can’t turn the motor over. All of the lights come on but as soon as I hit the “start position” nothing, just lights and seatbelt buzz. I just replaced the starter last year and I just had about $200 worth or electrical work done to find a bad ground. My gut tells me it’s either the “neutral safety switch” or the “starter solenoid”. What are the characteristics of a bad solenoid? I know the sound they make on a weak battery but can they work intermittently? Every time this happens I wait for a few and then it suddenly turns over and starts. (heat related?) Thanks a lot for the help

Sounds to me like a corrosion between the battery cable and battery post.

Maybe also check the cable ends under the insulation for corroded wire.

BTW< Because of the enlarege amount of energy needed by the starter Those Cable connections have to be clean as a whistle and tight.

  1. Check your battery cables like Uncle Mil1ion mentioned. Check your ground cable on engine block and frame for proper and clean contact (remove and clean if necessary).
  2. With a volt meter check the charging system with your engine running. What is the voltage of the charging system?
  3. With a volt meter check the voltage when you crank over the engine. What is the voltage.

This just happened in my 1977 F-150. To check if it is the solenoid have someone try to start the truck while you have your fingers on the solenoid. You should feel a "clicking". If the solenoid is good and the truck is an automatic it could be the transmission position switch. The book says it should be on the tranny under the truck for a 1977 but mine was on the column. I do not have the ability to pull the wheel so I had to take the truck to the shop, so I don't know what is involved in this repair. But that did the trick.
