Ijust noticed today that the idle on my truck seems to be fluctuating.....normally it is right around the 900-1000 mark on the tach.....but today i noticed at stoplights and other resting stops, it is going up to about 1400-1500 for about 30 seconds, then going back down to the 900-1000 range for 30 or 40 secs..then again....what is out of adjustment?
Yeah....Have no AC.....been running smooth and fine for months now......Just had the alt and battery checked because of starter difficulties.
Seems like this happend back over the summer and I just changed out all of the ignition components.....but that can be expensive, so I would like to isolate what couses this and fix that part.
A vacuum leak often leads to high idle. I'd check for that first. Common culprits are: carburetor gaskets, carburetor insulator spacers, intake manifold gaskets, and of course, any of the engine’s vacuum fittings, hoses and accessories.

if you have an automatic, might want to check the modulator valve on the tranny.
I had a high idle problem on a 65 F100 352 with a C6, what a difference with the new valve made!!
The distributor could be it...it has been in there since i bought the truck and a great deal of my oil leakage seems to come from arount where the dist chaft goes in the engine....perhaps I am feeling the first steps of it wearing out.
