I'm getting 3.73's tomorrow in my 94 F150 that's mostly stock. I am very curious how it is going to help acceleration, and general city driving feel. I'll update tomorrow and let you know how it feels.
Anyone else done it, and did it put a grin on your face ?

i went from 2.73 to 3.73. It was too much in my case, but I have a motor that you shouldn't rev up too much (300 I-6). If you have a 302/351, you'll absolutely notice it, and love it. (just assuming you currently have much lower gear, 3.08 or something)
Chris, let us know how it turns out. Im curious to see how noticable you think it is. I have the same engine/gear combo as you and was thinking of swaping mine over to 3.73 this summer. Also, are you running stock tires?
thanks
I have stock tires and wheels on now but I have other rims for the summer. The main reason I got the gears is that the 20" wheels and tires weigh a ton compared to stock and slowed me down.
3.08's are too low for even the I-6 unless you are in the flatter parts of Kansas and need to go 65-75mph all of the time and save gas. I can't imagine how bad 2.73's are.
I had 3.08's with an E4OD in my old 300 2wd F-150 and it was constantly shifting out of OD and gutless. I know the 300 is not like that when it's set up right, one of Dad's trucks had that motor with the 5 speed Mazda and 3.55's and it was unstoppable.
3.73's with either smallblock V-8 should be very nice but still better than 4.10's for fuel mileage..
yeah, it should be awesome and there is no doubt you'll notice it!!
gatesj: I had 2.73's :P with the I-6 and M5OD. It had ridiculous top speed. I put on 33" tires and went ot 3.73's, and now i can hardly drive it on the highway (too much rpm's for the I-6), so it's forcing me (willingly) to upgrade to bigger tires
Just got it back now (Motive Racing 3.73's). From 3.08's to 3.73's pretty much feels like each gear is 1 lower. 2nd feels like the old 1st etc. 5th now is a little longer than the old 4th and that's fine with me. Really seemed to wake things up. Crusing along in the city at 60km/h you can have it in 4th and still have good power to accelerate.....definitly something im not used to.
Havn't laid into it yet, he told me not to for the first few days. Ill update when I do.
Speedo was not affected. He said it gets the signal from something that isn't affected with swapping gears, only going to bigger tires---and even then it's fixable. It feels like a new beast.
'92-'96 pickup the speed off of the tone ring in the rear end. That's on the ring gear that obviously goes around once for each wheel revolution, not each driveshaft revolution, so it is unaffected by gear changes.
oh really i had no clue, that makes sense now, if i was thinking clearly when i had my transmission out i should of known the 2 wries coming out of it are for reverse
Now that its been a few days since you put the gears in, have you noticed or checked the gas milage? I was just curious to see if it went up or down or stayed pretty well the same.
