Does anyone know where I could possibly buy a starter rebuild kit (or even a new starter if it isn't too much more) for a 1974 10 h.p. Craftsman riding mower with a tecumseh engine? The starter model number is 33605. My starter just bite the dust.
where is the best place to get one? I have looked at several places and they dont have them. What is the typical price for a rebuild kit and a new one?
If if its a very hard part to find, you can always just get the brushs replaced, and send the stator to a motor repair corp. to get rewond if the stator is fried.
I called around to several local hobby shops and they were fetching nearly $200 for a riding mower starter!!! This seems a little bit high dont it? I had a buddy just get a starter for his F-350 with a 460 in it for just under $100. That's bigger and a lot more powerful. So why is the price for a riding mower starter so high?
You might check around and see if there's a Starter and Altenator shop in your area. They might be able to rebuild it for you. I have an old MTD rider. A new starter would have cost me almost 250$ but I got mine rebuilt for $55.
That looks like the one. It has the same serial number in the list there. I also found a few on ebay that were used. Would anyone suggest buying a used one off of there? I believe last time I looked, they were going for only about $15 used, plus shipping.
Be sure to take a good look at those shipping charges, that's where a lot of EBay sellers make their profit. A used 15 dollar starter with 25 bucks or so shipping isn't that great a deal as far as I'm concerned.
The thing with a used one is, you could save a few bucks and you might get a good one, or you might get one that works for the moment and then a week or so down the road you're right back where you are now, broker but wiser.
That one I linked to I thought was a pretty good price at what, 59 bucks new. Do a Google search on "33605 Tecumseh Starter" (that's what I did) and you should turn up quite a few, some higher (I saw another one at 84 bucks) and possibly some a little lower.
