Electric problems. I think
PS I don't know much about cars.
Please take a moment to check out the Guidelines, they contain important info you'll need when posting here.
So you mean the engine will crank but it won't fire? You say it wants to start, so that would indicate that it's getting fire but not fuel. Check your Inertia switch, it's a switch that cuts off power to the electric fuel pump in an accident but it can be triggered by a bad bump in the road, or even by crossing railroad tracks. I'm not sure where it's located in your Explorer, in the Rangers it's by the transmission tunnel right up against the firewall on the pass. side (inside the vehicle) but on Ford cars it's in the trunk. Your owner's manual will tell you where it is.
It could also be the fuel pump relay or even the fuel pump itself.
But, if it cranks and cranks but shows no indication of starting, that would indicate an ignition problem.
The first thing I'd check in that case is the Crank Position Sensor. It sends a signal to the coil telling it when to fire the plugs and they have a nasty habit of going out. Another possible culprit is the Ignition control module.
It would help a bit to know what engine you have, the 4.0 overhead cam engine (SOHC) or the 4.0 overhead valve engine (OHV)
I will check this. and I did check the fuel filter, the pump is working...as they say (my cousin said he heard the fuel pump turn on when you hit the switch.)
