in my 78 F-150 you are supposed to use dexron III micron not power steering fluid. And there is and actual tool to bleed a power steering pump that hooks up in line its a Rotunda tool older dealerships might still have them.

The listed below are power steering pumps which require Type F fluid:
79-97 All, incl. Explorer, Navajo, Expedition, ex..F150, F250, Ranger
85-95 Aerostar
78-96 Vans
96-98 Windstar
79-95 All, incl. Topaz, Escort, EXP, Lynx, LN7, Pinto
Bobcat, Granada, Tempo, Monarch, Versailles
91-98 Escort, Capri
87-98 Tracer
94-97 Aspire
95 Contour, Mystique

I worked at a Ford Dealership a number of years, and we used Motorcraft Type F on the power steering pumps when recommended.

Type F and Mecron transmission fluid are not interchangable.

I have also heard people using other types of transmission fluid and power steering fluid when Type F was recommended.

It seems easier sometimes to grab the only transmission bottle (say Mecron or ATF3) when type F trans fluid was not around, to top off a power steering pump.

So whats your point? Type F is still more foamy than powersteering fluid. If someone has a problem and they can't resolve it, they should switch to power steering fluid.

Like I said do some searching on it and you'll be surprise and how widly spread the problem is.

Mecron Transmission fluid should be used for the following:
96-00 All incl. Taurus, Sable, Continental,
ex. Windstar, Tracer, Escort, Capri, Aspire
95 Contour and Mystique
96-00 Ranger, Bronco II, Aerostar, Excursion
97-00 F150, F250, Vans, Navigator
95-00 Explorer, Mountaineer
93-00 Villager
99-00 Tracer

Its alway safer to follow what the Ford Manufacture is requiring for the product.
There is alot of here say go around.

When I have encountered a power steering system which continued to foam, flush out the power steering fluid with the recommended fluid. Then commence the power steering bleeding process.

Sometimes air is entering the power steering system through a loose line or fitting. This will also create foaming of the power steering pump.

If nothing as describes corrects the foaming fluid, then replace the power steering pump.

i got fed up with mercon and type f and started running the valvoline syn power synthetic ps fluid. with my hydro assist setup both of them foamed and thinned out too much, i run a saginaw pump though.

i love the valvoline fluid, i can turn the wheel faster and i havent heard a noise from my pump since the swap

Power steering fluid is used in the hydraulic power steering systems and is recommended for Saginaw power steering pumps.
