Tranny question:
Hi all. I have a 2002 ranger 2wd 2.3 dohc with approx. 65,000 miles on it.
Recently, 2nd gear has started to make a sort of whining noise while the truck is in motion, clutch engaged or not. It isnt very loud yet but it is consistent. i dont do burn offs or abuse it or anything and everything is completely stock. i looked in a haynes book and concluded that the syncro is going out. the thing is that i need it for work and i dont really have the extra money to have it repaired. and i dont know if my ford certified warranty covers it or not. so i need to know about how long i got before any real inconvienience sets in. i will fix it asap but it will be atleast 1000 miles or so before i do. oh and its only been doing it for about 75 miles that i know of. thanks in advance

Whining is a sign the tranny is going out, so yeah get it fixed asap. 65K is awfully early for any problems from it. If you're gonna get in the tranny, you might as well a) attempt to figure out why it did this so early, b) overhaul it while it's out, and do the clutch and stuff as well.

I would think it should be under some sort of warrenty for at least 70000 some thousand isn't it. Read the owners manual and it should tell ya warranty coverages.
Yes 65K is low for a trans to go out, but all depends if it has been abused serviced regularly or not. Did you buy new, used or what is the trucks history. Have you towed big loads that kind of stuff. Drain and refill the trans at a minimum looking to see if there are any large chunks of anything showing. The drain plug is magnetic and they will be found there. Dont be confused with normal fuzz.
I dont think you have the shift rail problems as the other older rangers, but check your fluid , probably drain and clean the differential while you are at it.

I bought it certified from a dealer and Im second owner and i have never towed or abused it. it does have a warranty but i havent checked into whether or not it covers it. I will check with the dealer tomorrow.
