I have a 76 F250 4x4 with a 390 4 spd. When i turn the key to the power postion but not starting it i look at the guages and the oil guage needle moves moves from all the way at the right to just about maxed out in pressure going to the left. The alt and gas guages work fine when i turn the key. Does anyone know what this could be? Is the guage shot or maybe the oil wire on the temp sensor not the oil sensor? I have never started this truck yet so i don't know, i just want to make sure the engine is getting oil pressure before starting it. Any help would be appreciated.
Are you sure the gas gauge is working fine? Let me relate my first drive in my 76 F100 w/ salesman. He drove truck off lot to service station a couple blocks away and swapped places w/ me to drive. The truck ran out of gas w/ 1/4 tank showing on the gauge. When I got truck home, and started taking stock of what needed fixing, I found that the oil, water and gas all read higher than what they probably should have. I mean, the water was maxed, but I wasn't close to overheating. The oil was way high... Well the long and short of it was that there is a little voltage regulator on the backside of the instrument panel, that adjusts the range of the senders voltage for the gauges. Replacing that voltage regulator fixed the 3 gauges. But what about the Amp gauge? Well I've had 3 Ford pickups, and one Ford Van, and the Amp gauge on everyone has never ever shown anything other than dead center. I'd pickup a volt gauge if I were you and forget that amp gauge.

Thanks for the info, i did not know there was a voltage reg. on the back of the guage cluster. I have a 79 F250 4x4 too that everything works on it so i think i will take that cluster out and ut it in this truck to see if i get the same results or not.
