front end identification

I have a 1982 4X4 and am rebuilding the whole truck. how do i know what type of front end i have. I've never got into the interworkings of the drive system so i don't know what all the numbers mean. Pretty much i need Ford front and rear end for dummies book

I want to say it is a TTB D50.
There should also be a little metal tag on the diff cover with all kinds of info on it.

if you have dual piston brake calipers you have a D50, if ytou have single piston calipers your front is a D44.

if your rear axle has a oil plug in the rear differential cover its a D60... if it does not and the fill plug is on the side on the forward section of the rear diff its a Sterling 10.25. if it has protruding hubs it is a full float, if not its a semi float.

whats your GVWR? if its over 8600 it'll have D50 front/D60 or 70 rear. if it is under it'll be D44 front/D60 rear

Cutts, the dual pistons brakes were avaible on the 44 to, as my 80 had the dual pistons calipers when it still had the dana 44 ttb. Easiest way to tell what you got is look at the hubs, if the hubs fill out the entire open wheel center then its a 50, if the hub tapers down and doesn't fill out the wheel centre then its a 44, odds are unless you got a 350 4wd (of which i've oonly ever seen one of those years with a ttb) you most likely have a 44ttb.

second 10.25 weren't avaible till about 85, in 82 it was either the dana 60/70 in the 250's and heavier, then the 1/2 tons either had the 8.8 or the 9".

8600 is Dana 44HD. 8800 is Dana 50.

Semi-float = Dana 44HD, Dana 60 SF rear.

My '85 has dual piston calipers on a Dana 44HD. 8600 GVWR

most stuff '86 and older is Dana 44HD.

85+ F250 ex cab long beds are all HD's, 8800 GVWR, D50 front, 10.25 FF rear.
Reg cabs were standard with the 44HD, no matter what GVWR(8600 is max for a reg. cab) or engine. The 50 was avalable in a reg cab with the heavy GAWR packages(snowplow, camper, max front GAWR etc.)
I've never seen a F250 with single piston calipers, but, I haven't been around any LD's older than 87 or so though.

I've seen a couple '86 and older semifloat F250s (LD I would think), have thought to look at the calipers...

However, I could swear I saw an F250LD 87-91 with an 8 lug 8.8. it drove away before I could really look.
