New engine & oil pressure
Just dropped in my fresh 460, I took off the coil wire and cranked it over for 30 sec of so but my mechanical oil gauge did not move I was hoping to build up pressure a bit before actually firing the beast-should it start to move fairly quick?
Question-
do you always have to prime these motors with one of the drill type primers first & or does the motor have to be up to idle speed before it will prime it sell for the first time?
I just don`t want to seize a new motor
thanks for the help

When turning it over with the starter it will eventually build oil pressure if everything is right inside the engine. It does take time to fill all the passages and the oil filter etc. It is always better to spin the oil pump at 500-1000RPM with a 1/2" electric drill before starting a new engine to check for oil pressure. If you don't get oil pressure with the electric drill then something is wrong.

Good idea, but use only Vaseline inside the pump.
Keep everything spotlessly clean!!!
When working with an oil pump for an engine rebuild or installation. Do not use any gasket sealers on the oil pickup. Use dry or oiled gaskets only. On threaded intake tubes use liquid pipe sealer only.
I have seen oil pumps and engines destroyed by a tiny spec of gasket sealer no bigger than a grain of salt.
I hate to see people use silicone for engine gaskets for this reason. It squeezes out inside the engine then tiny particles break off and are picked up in the oil pump.
