Dropped a new motor in my 89 Ranger. an 87 2.9 out of a bronco II.
After driving about 10 minutes the check engine light comes on. if I turn the motor off and restart the light goes out for aother l0 minutes.
Want to pull the codes. Is there a step by step procedure for this. My Chilton says to port in on the passager side fender. I can't find it. I see the power distribution box and a small ecc test box but neither has a plug in port described in my book.
could it be the left over egr system on the old motor. I plugged up the macumm lines but the tube from the header to the egr valve is still connected? could that pressured be tripping the check engine light.
motor runs fine, no aparant problems, just the annoying light.
Or read the info here. There's even some pics of what the EEC Self-test connector looks like (although as 87 XLT said, it's next to the fan motor right up by the firewall, sort of tucked in the corner there just under the passenger side hood hinge.)
Also a good description of how to pull the codes using just the Check Engine Light and a jumper wire, or a multi-meter. And a chart to interpret the codes.
