I was checking eBay tonight for Bronco parts and stumbled on a used 56mm for $175. New ones cost at least $300. Now, I don't know how one could screw up a TB short of an engine fire, but after doing some searching on the forum, I found something interesting. Someone had posted that BBK had a bad set of TBs out due to a bad mold.
I'd like to ****** up such a great deal (or have someone else here take advantage), but don't want to risk investing in a TB w/o a warranty that has a flaw. Anybody have more info on the flawed BBK's and what dates that BBK sold them. I figure I can ask the seller if he knows the manufacturing date.
Here is what the seller responded to the question of: when was it made, and why are you selling it.
"I don't know the production date. The TB is about 2 years old. A buddy of mine ran it on his F-150 for 1 summer. He sold the truck but kept all the aftermarket parts. I took this TB in trade for a Mustang Pro-M air meter that he wanted. I have no use for it and everybody I know with F-series trucks are diesels."
Everthing sounds ok, but I'm still wondering about the possibility of bad molds.
Well, someone else bought it, oh well. I was doing some research on the "whistling" that a few people on the forum have experienced, and found that many people have cured the problem by chamfering the edges within the TB. Apparently, if the bore of the TB matches the bore of the upper intake in just the right manner, the whistling noise occurs. BBK offers to fix the problem within the year warranty, but I think if I ever stumble accross a used one again, I'll pick it up and fix it myself with a carbide cutter or a dremmel sander.
