Wink HELP engine turns over but doesnt run...

Hey all,
This is my first ford...
I just bought an 89 EB Bronco 351 windsor for $500.00...
The guy said it wouldn't start one morning, and it has been sitting for a year...
I replaced the starter, solenoid, and I have a fairly new battery.
I was told that it is the neutral safety switch,
so where is it because the one I bought today looks like a spark plug on steriods...lol
Where does it go?
Any suggestions?
PS I have an AOD transmission.
Thanks for any input...
Froggie from Florida

I'm more familiar with the 73-79 neutral safty switches, and from 73-77 they are on the steering colum(VERY easy to get to and adjust or change), and after that they switched to haveing them on the transmission. If you have a chiltons repair manuel, it should have somthing in there describing where it is and how to change it.

That is a hell of a deal. Even if you have to bring it to a mechanic to switch the NSS(neutral safty switch) you got a very nice Bronco for $500, good deal!

so it does turn over? is there spark to the plugs? is there fuel getting to the plugs. that safty switch is under the dash either driver side or passenger side. I have to find mine in my 88 as well so when you locate yours please let me know. there is so much glass in my cab i dont want to crawl around in there just yet

Well all in all I have been told that what I bought the NSS was not the right thing, what I bought was something that looked like a spark plug on steriods, what my truck needs is a NSS that looks like a metal plate, so I need to change that, also my fuel pump inside my tank!! NOT looking forward to that work, I need to be reminded again why I bought a Ford...laughing, it was only 500$

That's a steel for a newer Bronco in decent condition with alittle bid of labor to have it running strong.
While your in there(pulling the tank) you might want to think about replacing the fuel sending unit(shows if the tank is full or empty), I know they would go out on the 78 79 Broncos often. You might want to get a Haynes and Chilton's repair manuals for your model Bronco, and in there they will show and tell you what NSS you need and how to fix/install it.

The truck is beautiful, and its green...my favorite color!
But other than that, I have some prices on the fuel pump, sending unit and screen, I think I will pay someone to do it though, I dont have any "ford" experience, mechanically speaking. And of course I need to break down and buy a Chilton's, the manual that came with the truck doesn't say much.
Ironically I found some repair reciepts when I was cleaning the truck out, it has a new transmission, transfer case and new brakes all the way around it as of 2004...
Man what a steal!!!
Also I want to thank ya'll for the input!

If the engine will crank when you attempt to start it, [in park or neutral] then it doesn't appear like there is a problem with the neutral safety switch. My '88 with a 351W, has the fuel pump mounted on the left side of the frame, near the driver seat. There could also be one inside the fuel tank, but I've never had a need to change that one. You didn't say how many miles are on the engine? Check to see if the rotor is turning in the distributor when you crank it. Also check the spark plugs for oil fouling and run a compression test on each cylinder.

The fuel pump in the gas tank aint too hard to deal with, its just getting the tank down that is a bit of a pain b/c you have to drain it all and then break loose those bolts that have been sitting in the same place for 17 years.

What exactly is the truck doing when you turn the key? Just turning over like you have no fire?
If so, I'd check each spark plug wire first by pulling them off while someone turns it over for you while you look for a spark, check the signal cable coming off the solenoid first. If that isn't it then I'd check the distributor. Is it spinning first of all, and also inspect the rotor and cap.

If all that looks good then you gotta move on to fuel. I think the best way to do it would be to check your fuel pressure. Right off the bat, I'd change the fuel filter. It is located right under the driver's side door mounted on the frame. When you change it see it there is alot of trash in there, if so, you may have trash in your tank and will need to inspect that.

$500 is a great deal even if the engine is bad. I bought my 89 for $1500 with a known bad engine.

It just occured to me, that if the NSS is broke then like FS88Bronco said, the engine won't even turn over.
