Derrick, that was yours truly you were conversing with via emails. I got you email address from a post I had researched from a month or so ago. In that old post, you responded to the effect that you had performed the aforementioned task on your truck. I emailed you directly just in case you didn't check this message board with the same frequency some other do.
Anyway, all's well that ends well. If anybody has any questions, please feel free to ask me, but hurry before I forget this chapter and tackle something new.

ok anybody know a web site that has replacement rag joints for sale or something. just my luck, every auto parts store in my area has no clue what i am talking about, or says "good luck, buddy" so any help would be great. oh yeah, Look Atcha!
You should try Napa, Kragen, Pepboys etc....
Look for the "HELP" brand replacement parts. as for `Rag Joints` I had to use two sets to get the `Rag and pins that were the correct size...

LAST EDITED ON 04-Mar-01 AT 09:16 AM (EST)[p]Pat, Since you live in the land of the goonies. try asking for the steering damper that fits between the steering gear and the column.
As John suggested, try NAPA, I know that they carry them. ;-)

ok ill make the drive and see if napa has em. you wouldn't think that a suburb of los angeles would be land of the goonies, go figure. thanks for the tip.
I liked doing mine so much a few weeks ago, that I decided to do it again today. Actually I got it back together a little wrong so I fixed it today while I was replacing the brake power booster (sure a lot easier without the MC and PB in the way).
Pat, when reassembling be very certain that you install the new stud on the side of the coupling where the cinching bolt enters. Otherwise you will have a really hard time tightening the cinching bolt if there is a big nut in the way. Second, make sure your steering wheel is in alignment with the front wheels. I made this mistake and was the reason I re-did things today.
As for your question, NAPA, Pepboys, O'Reilly, etc all have what you need. You just have to look in the right place at each of these stores. NAPA didn't have them on the "Help" ailse, but Pep and O'Reilly do.
ok got the replacement kit finally and new question, on nthe kit the two studs are different sizes, one larger than the other one. on my truck thought the sttuds are the same size, and are a little larger than even the larger ones in the kit. I am wondering if the studs that come in the kit will be ok to use, or are are the OEM studs able to come out and be reused. if neither of the above, is there anything else that could be used and maintain safety? I have a '71 f-250 if that is of any relevance.
Pat, I think it should work fine. You should be able to hold the new joint at the location and see if it will fit in the slot, and then install that sucker. :-)
What did you have to ask for at the counter to get it? Which store did you find it in?

got it at napa, like you guys said, i asked for the steering coupling and finally the guy knew what i was talking about. at most of the other parts stores, they hired kids who dont know what they are talking about or dont care. actually at pepboys, by freinds prissy "my daddy will do it for me" ex was working the parts counter, but aparently some guy had called looking for the same piece for a '70 f-250 earlier that day so they had one in stock........i got it. but im positive that the rag will work, im just wondering about the discrepancy in the studs, if that will put too much play in the wheel, or possibly slip. there seems to be at least a 1/4 inch difference in the diameter of the small stud versus the original. the guy said that the kit was for years 66-75, so thats pretty general.
