Do they really add much horsepower? and they also sound diffrent ,right? Where can i find a good cheap set of ceramic, i wish i could have polished but i know the ceramic is the best. i have a 73 f250 4x4 with a 460. they dont list them for that truck what should i order them as? Can i buy them used?
I don't remember off the top of my head, but I don't think 460s came in 4wds until 79 or so. If that is the case, then order 79 460 headers.
In some cases with a new intake, carb, intake and lifters, and then headers can add 50 HP over exhaust maniflods. If you just put new headers and left the rest of the engine completly stock you wouldn't get that much performance out of them.
L&L have some nice headers with their own type of finish on them(not polished or ceramic, but not painted)and they don't rust. I know summit racing has some ceramic coated headers for a 400 for $250, but don't know if they have some for a 460 expecially not at that price. Headers will also sound a little different and louder.
I bought some headers from Performance Parts Warehouse (PAW) for my 76 F250 4X4. They would work as well for the a 73. Same thing. Those were Hookers. I also had to get a different motor mount set up made by Hooker to make it all fit together. Prior to this set up, I had some home made motor mounts for the engine swap and the headers wouldn't fit around it, hense the Hooker Mounts.
You should be able to find headers relatively easy for that truck with the 460. That has been a very popular engine swap over the years.
as others mentioned you have several options ,but none are really cheap.inframe headers there are stans tri y headers, l&l headers, hooker super comp headers (which i run) or you can run fenderwell headers such as l&l or hedman or mad dog. if you buy a set of used headers you can send them off to a place like jet hot to have them ceramic coated ,but its not cheap either around $275 or so to get them coated .you could watch e-bay for a set to come up, but new most will run $400 to 500. not cheap but definately worth it
Check out this site he offers fenderwell exit headers. This will reduce all the heat around the starter trans and engine and moves the exhaust outside the fenderwells. this is the style I hope to go with. I beleive summit also offers these. I am not sure how good the prices are but there is alot of info and pics on this web site to check out.
You might want to put in a good RV cam(I left that off in my previous post, must have forgot) and with a new cam you need new lifters. Most of the work would be done after you take off the old intake, and take out the old lifters and then swap cams, and you'd notice alot more of a power difference.
with just the intake and headers what would i see in horse power? where do i find l&l headers? i dont know if there was work done to this engine. it runs so nice now i would hate to change much. i also do not want to cosume to much gas. i have a 72 that needs everything i might build that right up. i am just looking to make this one prettier. i will probably drive this truck daily.
my friend says the 460 was never built to have power like a 390. does it have more horse stock than a 390?

L&L headers aren't cheap. Any header for a 460 isn't cheap.
IF you do all the work your self, a new intake, carb, cam and lifters shouldn't cost to much, and will give you good power(also your mileage might actually increase). Then headers will get ya on price.
hello 4x4bigblock you will still need a body lift for l&l's other wise your body will hit the headers l&l is nice but your [paying alot for a name and you will also need to trim out some of your fender if you want fender well exit i personaly love my fender well exit's i have a extra set of hooker super comp's that dont need a body lift but they arnt in the best shap and need collectors they r solid but i have to do some patch work due to a fly wheel explod i would sell them cheap but anyhow if you bottom end is good and ya just want to have a bit more power and sound nice? all i would do would be put in a rv cam i wouldnt even bother with the intake save your money 460's have a good flowing intake anyhow maybe look into a good carb like a 750 holley or something like that and a good set of headers and you will be impressed and as far as a 390 out doing a 460 not in this life time i have both nothing aganst a fe block the only motor that can keep up with a 460 stock is a stock 428 now thats a good fe persolnay i would much rather have a 352 than a 390 but good luck on your build if your intersted in the headers let me know i would let them go for 150.00 ther r only 2 yrs onld and never saw winter but are not coated
i have a aftermarket 4 barrel and maybe a cam and lifters so i was not going to change anthying there. i have anice dual stainless exhaust. she runs nice ands sounds and is mean. so i think there was work done. someone put money into it. i am was thinking of headers and intake alone at least for this summer. i want to customize the interior. if anything will those l&l headers go on easy on 73 highboy? sound like i should get them on. then the intake to pretty things up.
