I'm wanting to change out the engine in my 78 f-150 4x4 4 speed manual. I currently have a 300 6 cyc uses oil bad and I'm wanting to know what the best engine to put in it? I have a 4 inch lift kit with 33 x 12.50 super swamper tsl's. I have a 1971 429, 351W, and a 1978 302. The 302 has the right oil pan for the 4x4 but the 351W and 429 does not. I would LOVE to have my 429 in this truck but i'm not sure how hard it will be. I would need new oil pan, bell housing/flywheel for straight drive and exhaust. The 302 or 351W wouldn't be too hard to change out i already have flywheel for a V8 but i have read that some people have problems with things hooking up to 351W as far as headers and such goes. What would be my best choice?
The more i been reading im leaning towards the 429. The way i read is i can get a oil pan for a van 75-78 with 460 and it is rear sump. Iv read that a 390 flywheel will work with 429 and the 351M/400 bellhousing will work. Is this true? what starter will i use with a 351m/400 bell housing with 390 flywheel?
i dont care about the fuel economy being its not a every day driver. would like to have the 429 in it if i can come out around 1000. The swap kit at L&L is $2,600 and i dont want to pay that. ill settle for a 302 before i pay that much but if i can come out with 429 in it it would be nice. I have a 23 ft cabin cruiser and the L6 is a real strain but it will pull it.
i currently have the 429 in a 71 f-100 with custom built moutor mounts could i not just unbolt the stands out of the 71 and bolt them in my 78? and use my custom mounts in my 4x4? aren't the engine stands the same in 2x4 and 4x4?
so i will have to buy engine stands reguardless which motor i go with. I only have engine stands for a 2x4. sounds like more money than i wanna spend. guess ill just build the 6 cyc and leave it in there.
Did you just ask about swapping motors and which one would be better for towing? etc
And now you just talked yourself out of the whole thing because you need to change mounts and such.
stick with a stock truck and give those v8's to someone who can use them
is all the V8 4x4 stands the same? 302,351m/400, 460? you can buy motor mounts from advance auto for a 1978 ford f-150 4x4 with 460 for only 80 bucks.

I installed a 460 into a 78 with a 300-6/Std. a number of years ago. The front sump pan will work, as long as you are not jumping the truck. I have no lift kit and have never had an interference problem. While the 390 flywheel will bolt up, there may be balancing issues and starter drive problems. I converted mine to a C-6 from a 351M at the same time. The two wheel drive exhaust works with some minor adjustments to the head pipe. I bolted the 460 to the trans using the stock location, leveled the engine and made my own adaptor to match the frame. It was fairly simple using pieces of angle bolted to frame using the bolts that attach the upper spring perch. This was around 10 years ago, has been little problem, and the increase in power more than makes up for the drop in gas mileage.
