Hello all,
I am new to the site and not sure if this is posted correctly. I have a 2001 F-250 that started making a loud clicking type noise from the left front. It only has about 60,000 miles on it. It only does it occasionaly and doesn't matter if you hit bumps, turn the wheel, or how fast you are going. I have checked brakes, differential fluid, u-joints - nothing. The dealer wants $96.00/hour to look at it. Has anyone else had this problem and could it be the hublock trying to engage or disengage at various times? I raised the truck and tried moving the wheel to check for bearings or ball joints and all seems to be fine. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, I would appreciate it.
Yes it could be the hubs it could also be the hub bearing wheel bearing assembly or needle bearing in the back of that assembly. Make sure the axles are not turning when in 2wd. Do you have ESOF.
It does have ESOF. Is there a way to narrow down which one of those would be bad? So, in 2wd, I just want to turn the driveshaft and make sure that the axles are not turning, correct? Just to let you know, this only happens some of the time, not all the time with the noise. Thanks again for your input.
Yes to your question but check each ujoint behind each wheel for play and see if you can turn it freely. Or jack up the front and spin each wheel and see if the ujoint behind it spins.
I did jack it up already and when the driveshaft is spun, the axle is spinning. The u-joints seem to be good - no play in them. I just don't know what to do next and the dealer charge is just crazy but, they are the ones who said that it was the hublock that was bad by the description. Who knows.
