1) How much are you looking to spend?
2) Do you want it to be heard a mile away?
3) What sort of music do you listen to?
4) Are you looking to replace everything? or keep stock head unit?
5) What sort of 04 is it? regular cab? screw?
It's difficult to recommend too much without knowing answers to the above, someone could recommend you a $500 HU when you only have a $500 budget for the whole system.
I have a shop and install LOTS of systems. My personal opinion is a Alpine headunit, Infinity speakers, and a Kenwood KSC-SW1 powered subwoofer. The subwoofer fits behind the seat and takes very little room. This is pretty much my minimum entry system. The more you spend on the headunit, the more features you will get. Infinity speakers are not cheap, but provide excellent sound. As in a previous post, I HIGHLY recommend Crutchfield as the source for the components. Not only do they have great advise, give you all the mounting kits, adapters wires, and instructions for free, but if you change your mind they even pay for the shipping back to them for returns. If you want more power, then you have to give me a price limit and what you want to achieve. One competition system we built in a dodge ramcharger actually ran out of airspace for all of the amps. One last thing, do not get Kicker speakers. While they make descent subwoofers, one customer insisted on kicker speakers because they liked the looks. They did not deliver anything near the quality sound of Infinities.
ya i figured the kickers wouldnt be a smart choice. Im looking to replace the whole system, and i already have a head unit for the truck, so all i need is everything else. ive got the supercab with the new body style for 04, and was wondering about sub boxes for the back, actual speakers, and amps. In all, i dont want to spend more than 400-500 dollars on all of those, because i already have a head unit. anyone who has a good system that would like to contribute, or if anyone else has advice about curtain unites ide greatly apreciate it.
I just put a system in my 99 SuperCrew and really like it a lot. I went with Infinity Kappa 5x7's in the door and put an Infinity Basslink T Sub in the back. I wasn't looking for a system that would rattle the neighbors walls, I just wanted a nice sounding system so I am happy with my setup.
I went with a Kenwood EZ-700 Sirius deck. It's an awesome deck but it isn't made anymore but you can still find them on the Internet and get a good deal. I bought the vehicle brand new and have maybe had people in the back seat maybe 4 times so I decided to fold down the rear seat, mount the Infinity Basslink T on the rear deck and will eventually custom make areas in the rear of the cab for guns/bows etc..
The Basslink T is self powered so I didn't have to worry about buying/mounting an amp for the system. I packed the doors with dynamat and the interior cab noise went down quite a bit and the Infinity Kappa's in the doors sound awesome.
I im in the process of putting a new system in my 04 super cab im charging the battery on the cam atm, ill post some pics of what i have so far to give you an idea.
Right now I have:
Pioneer DEH-P4800MP Head Unit
Mephis Audio M Class 500/1 Amplifier
Custom Built Sub box goes under the rear bench seat behind the drivers side
1 JL Audio 8W7
Im working on replacing my speakers up front with Comps and the speakers in the rear doors.
