1997 Expedition 4X4 problems

My 1997 expedition while in 4X4 mode and backing up while turning wants to grind to a stop. What would be the culprit. Trans. rearend, or what? Please help Thanks

Your binding up dur to your on dry pavement (im assuming) should'nt engage the 4wheel mode unless in ice snow or really loose gravel. the front axle needs to have
a little give on the road because it acts like a positraction with out the limited slip.
