Hey guys i'm stumped on this one? I have a 1997 F-150 5.4, automatic, 4x4. My problem is it keeps trying to stall when I go from park to drive, or from park to reverse. I have replaced the IAC, fuel filter, cleaned the MAF and air filter, replaced battery terminals, and cleaned the posts . I have had a 1000watt stereo system, 200 watt linear, and 400 watts of offroad lights on this truck for about a year now. The truck was dead after jammin for about 2 hrs without the truck running at a party. I had the battery/alternator tested at Oreillys 3 months ago and they said it checked out OK. Just recently is when this "stalling" occured so the only thing left to do to my knowledge was replace the TPS so I did. I reset the computer and when I reconnected the battery and tried to fire it up it almost wouldnt crank. It still does the "stalling" thing and when in park with the stereo sytem cranked up the motor lowers RPM's when the bass is hitting.
I know it is a little late of me to ask this but would a bad battery make a truck do this because I have read that if the TPS doesnt recieve the right amount of voltage it doesnt function properly?
It could be that the amount of amprage your trying to pull is more than what the alt can handle thus killing the battery. I would try to find out how much the system pulls for amps and the lights as well.
With the accessories that you have mentioned, if the stereo/amps and the lights are at maximum output, then you are putting a 133.33A load on the battery and alternator.
I don't know what the alternator on your truck can put out but, this is most likely more than the alternator can provide even if the truck was running to try to keep up with the load. With that much of a load on your electrical system, you may want to consider adding a second battery and alternator to the truck to provide the power that you need. Good luck!
Thanx guys, I put a Red Top Optima on today and it fixed the problem for now. But yes the lights still dim at an idle, just not when at about 1000 rpms or higher. What I was listing above(ie:1000w amp, 400w lights, & 200w linear)isnt ran all at the same time very rarely do I have my stereo cranked with all my lights on as well as being keyed down on my cb. More or less it is just the stereo amp that is sucking the power and my intensions are to get a 1 fared capacitor and see if I can get my alternator beefed up.
