COP's

Ok- I have a 01 Screw 4x4 5.4L with 82k on it. I have 1 COP bad. I don't want to try replacing it myself. The dealer says I need to go ahead and replace them all.

I have 2 questions:

1. Do I need to replace them all?

2. Can I trust any decent mechanic to do it, or should I pay extra for the dealer to do it?

Thanks guys, I love the forum.

Replacing the COP is a fairly easy procedure even for a person with minimal skills and tools, especially if you know which cylinder requires the replacement coil.
I had to replace one of mine about a year ago - takes about 10 minutes.
I would recommend just replacing the bad one, instead of all of them. If you're really dead set on not doing it yourself, any competent shop should be able to do it, althouth, they will have to scan the code themselves to see which cylinder is bad.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. Will a new COP come with the boot as well? I would classify myself as "minimally" skilled--I change my own oil and fuel filters and that is about it.

I wouldn't suggest replacing all the COPS, especially at a dealer. That would run you at least $600, probably $800. Especially since the COPS don't fail on any particular schedule.

If you wanted to have the plugs changed, have the COP boot only replaced on all 8 cylinders (less any COP replaced). Boots are about the same cost as a plug, $4.00 each. New COPs include the boot.

#1 or #2 COPS can be replaced quickly and easily, the rest are pretty challenging, especially on the driver's side.

A competent mechanic can do this, try to get one that has done it before. You don't want to pay for his training and learning curve at $70-90/hour.
