Went to a Rv show last Sunday and climbed into a Motorhome built on a F450 chassis with a new V10. The motorhome was about 25' (?) so just for kicks I asked the salesman what kind of MPG this beast should get. Without even hesitating he says "Oh, it should be good for about 14-15 mpg ..easy!"
As I fall down the stairs from shock, I'm imagining what the poor guy who buys it, fills it up for the first time and gets 6-8 mpg, is going to think. Right...back to the dealer to find out whats "wrong" with it.
I don't know what rear end comes on the F450 w/ a V10, but its gotta be a 5.33 or so.
Oh well, thought you guys could appreciate this, especially because we OWN the V10.
No wonder there is so much negative feelings out there concerning V-10 fuel economy. When you go in expecting twice what actuality is. An uninformed salesperson spreading misinformation can do more damage to a product than any mechanical failure.
I still say for the work it is doing, the V-10 does a terrific job on fuel mileage. It takes fuel to make horsepower. Even the japs havn't solved that problem.
Could it be that that same salesman read 14-15MPG for V10's here on this site?
As we've seen lately, quite a few people are quick to point out "only in their dreams can you get 14-15 (or 13-14) with a V10", not taking into account that we're talking empty SD's, not loaded-to-the-gills E450's or F450/550's.
Hey, it's still better than my brother's around-'68 F600 with a 330MD. That thing was lucky to get 5MPG loaded or not. And that's with a gutless 330.
The same saleman probably turned around and told the next person they could tow a 25' TT with a CRV.
"Oh sure! The manufacturers always understate your vehicles towing capabilities. We'll just add a weight distribution hitch and a sway bar and you'll be fine"!

I think you have it backwords, lol. Usually the dealer tells you you need a F350 Tow Boss to haul the 6'x10' utility trailor and the camper dealer tells you you can haul the 27' WideLite (that wieghs 7000lb dry) with your ranger, no need for a larger truck, thats what they told my dad when he bought his camper only to find out it was a he!! of a workout for his F150, he now has a 96 F350 Dually with the 7.5L, a little over kill yes but better to ahve to much than not enough!
You don't even have to listen to the dealers. If you want a really good laugh, just go look at the MPG numbers on the stickers. My wifes minivan was rated 18/24 when we bought it. She usually gets about 14, never over 15. I didn't know whether to cry or laugh when I took it back to complain and the next day they said their computer told them it's getting 18.
And your right, I meant the RV dealership. They'll sell you anything, just as long as you can get it off the lot.
But your right, if you bought your V-10 as a daily driver you'll be disappointed. But for towing, it's very efficient for a gasser, but not that efficient.
they are all the same even boat sales people. most are very good at lieing. best laugh i get all the time is my v10 and my wifes jeep liberty both get the same mpg's around town .shes just a little better on the highway but only by 2mpg's

What did I miss.. I thought the V10 was suppose to better for a daily driver than the 6.0 or are you comparing it to the minivan.?
My mom's class A motorhome has a V10 with 5.88 rear gear. 32 feet of camping lux = 6mpg. It might be a tiny bit better cause the generator runs off the same tank. I wish it got 14.
I was comparing it to someone who expects it to get 14-15 every day, but regardless of that most other larger vehicles don't do much better. I also have a friend with a small Nissan pickup, not the new full size, that gets 14, he's really dissapointed.
