Get some good calcium supplements; my son got really, really bad shin spints during basic training last year. When he got to his unit, the medic proscribed calcium supplements; in a couple of weeks, he was cured. Sit with your foot flat on the floor, now raise your toes/ball of the foot, as high as you can leaving your heel in contact with the floor; hold it for a second or two, relax, repeat. This will build up the muscles in the front of your leg that support the shin bone.
one motrin a day gets me by....takes about 14 days to get in your system but pretty effective anti-inflamitory if you ask me. stretches, insoles etc like stated probably aint a bad idea
imo, The best thing to do right now is to stop running and let your legs heal. I use to run five miles a day and what I had to do is stop running for a month with gentle walking. The ultimate solution was better sneakers.
When I got shin splints from walking I had to ditch the Timberland boots and ones like it. What I have found to be the best are Bates Enforcer boots from www.sportsmansgiude.com. About $50 and they come in women sizes too. I really like the steel toe combined with the zippers.
Thanks to everyone for all the great advice! (Love the pic, too, feddoc!) I haven't run in three weeks, now, and I'm gettin' antsy. I did do a 62-mile tandem ride last weekend, and my shins hurt the next day, which has not happned for me before??... I have been doing various calf-raises and toe-raises and stretching, in the meantime.
I bought new shoes when I started running - they are the Nike Shox. They feel really good when I'm running; nice & cushioned. I asked all my runner-friends what shoes they had, before I bought mine - almost everyone I asked has New Balance. Asics was a close second. But, I have a very narrow foot and a high arch, and when I tried on various New Balance models I felt no support at all from any of them. So, that's how I ended up with the Nike's.
I'm hoping to get back out there soon - there's another 5K at the end of the month I wanna do.
Yup, I have noticed that Nike does seem to be built for more of a narrow foot. I have wide feet and New Balance seems to work better for me. I currently have Nike's though, mostly because they were on sale and these particular ones seemed to have a wider than normal build. I wish I would have bought New Balance though. Sometimes I'm just too cheap and will settle for something that is not for me to save a buck. LOL
When I was picking shoes I wanted a pair of nikes first, but my wide feet stopped that really quick. I bought a pair of new balance 1005's and loved them. I now have a pair of 1007's and they are equally as good. I did put a pair of superfeet in mine too which was really nice!
