Walking shoes

For a recreational walker is there any good reason to use walking shoes instead of runners? I walk mainly on pavement with some gravel roads and easy trails too. Usually it's for an hour or so at a time.
What brands do you like? New Balance? Propet? Or?

I have found that shoes by Redwing are the most comfortable. They have a shoe that looks like a runner but is tougher and you can walk all day in them. I walk several miles a day over varying terrain. They are pricier ($200 Can) but last a lot longer than the normal cheaper brands.

Consider "trail running" shoes... I got a pair by North Face and they seem pretty comfortable and have good support. By far the best hiking boots I've owned were by Raichle: bought them Friday, went backpacking Saturday with no break-in and no blisters. I've tried a couple of different "lightweight" hiking boots and both felt good initially but longer walks were torture.

These things are great for trails. I got a pair of Salomon's and the first time I wore them was a hike up an 8000ft peak on loose, rocky terrain. They were unbelievably comfortable and gripped like glue. I think I could probably wear them as an all around shoe and be comfortable. As far as athletic type walking shoes go, I would try on all of the name brands out there and see which ones fit the best and feel good. I like Nike, New Balance are a little to narrow for my foot, but by far my favorite, the ones I wear as an all around shoe, are Asics Gel's.

I wear new balances too. Along with a pair of Nike flipflops for the pool. I am thinking about getting another pair of Redwings for all around general use. I also have a pair of Dr. Martens that I wear. But they have an annoying squeak that I haven't figured out yet.
