I have a 79 F350 on 42 inch tires and was wondering if anyone has converted the drum brakes to disc brakes. And if so where did you find the parts and what did it cost.
lot of guys have done it, what axle do you have? i would assume a dana 60. i looked into getting a kit for a dana 70 DRW, but it was more $ than i have for it right now. i think you can do a dana60 for a less than $250, if you dont need e-brakes. not bad if you need to re-do your brakes anyway. also check e-bay for brackets, they will tell you which calipers to use
Hi guys. I'm a newb here but no stranger to forums. Nice place you have here. I figured I'd find what I needed...
I have a 75 F-250, 390, w/drum brakes all round. I too would like to make the drum to disk swap as it is brake and axle overhaul time anyway...(Axle seals are leaking) That is unless there is a good argument as to why I should keep drum brakes???
Anyway, I have no way to tell what axles I have but do have the axle ID plate info:
Front: 4.09. D3TA GA
603395-1
Rear: 4.10. D5TA LDB
603583-11
Anybody know how to interpret these? I'm guessing the 4.9 and 4.10 is gearing? Does the 60 in the serial mean they are 60 axles???
Anyway, if one of you is in the know, I'd really appreciate the help and a good point in the right direction of where to buy the disk conversion.
The gain is HUGE. The old drum brakes on these trucks leave a lot to be desired with stock size tires. Increase the leverage by running a 42" tire and you REALLY have to stand on them to get it to stop. With 4 wheel discs I can lock up 44's on pavement with little effort. I bought a kit from Blackbird's. He's a good guy to work with, very helpful and about the best prices around.
There are also a lot of threads regarding this converion in the axle/brake forum if you do a search over there.
Thanks for the reply. As you can understand, me being new here, I don't know the forum (where to look) or products (what to look for) so I appreciate the pointer. On the Buell forum people can be harsh on newbs so I appreciate it. I'll look there.

Have a good one!
Charlieboy, first of all, I think this thread is for the rear brake conversion (i think anyway)
But for your question, I don't think there is a way to change to disk brakes with a closed knuckle front end (which is what the drums had). I did the front break conversion with my 74 f250 4x4 and the way I did it was with an entire front end out of a donor truck. I have posted what was necessary on another thread a few months back. If you do a search on this forum you should be able to find alot of info on this swap.
If you need any other input you can pm me and I will do what I can to help. Or you can also start your own thread specifically addressing your job and I am sure you will get some great input.
Feel free to send me a personal message if you need any particulars. I do have some tips and a couple of heads up you might need on the swap if you're serious about doing it. It's nice to be prepared. It really isn't that bad of a job at all, just time consuming. Helps to have the tools too.
I should clarify what I meant. I made the Buell guys sound just mean. I meant that they can be harsh when someone asks a question that seems obvious to them...
Thanks for the info Olford. In the end, I've decided to contact dynatrac and see what they can do with my tubes or maybe even just buy complete units from them.
I just bought the wife a new truck, the least she could do is let me buy 6K in axles right??? LOL!
Oh lordy . . . Dyna-Trac makes great axles but it's more axle than 90% of people need and it's about 4-5 times what an axle should cost. If you want to spend the money I'd recommend keeping an eye out for a 78-79 Dana 60 (on ebay quite frequently). You can have one bought, shipped, and rebuild for $2000. It'll have disc brakes and hold up to a lot of abuse. For another $1000 you can add a locker, 35 spline outers, non-neckdown inners, new hubs and have a really stout setup for about half of what Dyna-Trac charges. Don't get me wrong, they build great axles but they do it at a great price too.
