i just installed shorty headers on my 86 351w f150.the truck is know 2-3 times louder than it was.is this normal with headers,or is it possible there is a leak between the collector and y pipe. thanks
Every vehicle I've ever installed headers on has been louder, even on the few where I've made no other exhaust system changes. Sometimes only a little louder, but I've also noticed a smoother tone over stock cast iron manifolds.
the loudness is coming from the back of the motor ,seems to be where the headers & y pipe connect .sound out of tail pipe is like before i put headers on,throaty.basicly the loudness is coming from under the hood.is that normal?
It's normal for you to hear more sound from outside the headers themselves. The thinwall tubing used on headers just seems to allow more sound through rather than absorbing it like the heavy cast iron does. Thus, we get the typical header "ticking" sound (not the exhaust leak ticking) which most people seem to like. Some don't, however. I have a buddy who hates it and won't run headers on any of his trucks. Stock cast iron only, through Flowmasters and duals.
checked her today, there are leaks where collector meets y pipe.thats where my loud sound is coming from.got to get her fixed, cause of local cops.thanks from all.
My y-pipe didn't line up with my headers very well, so I took a torch and heated up the y-pipe and bent it in line with the headers and it sealed up well.
