I have done several 460 conversions and had to do like monterbaby said, loosen the tranfercase mounting bolts to let everything slide back to get the mounts to line up.
I sold a guy a set of solid mounts and he called me all pissed off that the mounts wouldn't fit. I crawled under his truck to loosen the transfer and in 5 minutes had the motor in. He felt like an @ss.
Hi guys been a while since I've been to the forum but here's my $.02 Swapped a 390 for a 351w in my 74 F100 a couple of years ago. I was able to fit the small block on the FE's towers but had to attach the motor mounts (loosely) to the towers and then the towers to the frame and then tighten the motor mounts (but they DID fit). I was able to mount the transmission (C6) on the two forward holes instead of where they originally where. There has been no real drivabilty issues in this configuration but the engine is tilted up in the front a bit and a few inches forward. Now this would probably not work on a 4x4 due to front axle line up but is was no problem on the 2wd. I finally got around to getting the small block towers and plan on installing them because it just seems like the right thing to do. So does a 390 and a 400 use the same size towers, if so the 302 should fit on them with a little finesse if you can't readily find the small block towers. I don't forsee my upcoming swap out to be that difficult (although I will have to cut and reweld my header flanges on my exhaust) hope this helps.
boatswanna I think you have been lucky. Putting those mounts in stressed like that.I am kind of suprized that the rubber did not let loose. 289/302/351w and 351 Cleveland can use the same mounts. The 300 I6 mounts are extend forward because it is longer. The mounts have to center in the block to balance it.If the 300 mount did not extend forward of the frame perch the 300 would have 4 cylinders in front of the motor mount.Transmissions sit in about the same place reguardless of engine installed otherwise every engine would require different driveshafts.
I dont want to get too far off topic, but there's no stress on my mounts. The only reason the engine wouldn't just drop in was the length of the studs on the rubber mounts. If both studs were an inch shorter I would have never known the difference. There are two sets of transmission mount holes on my Ranger XLT about two inches apart. Also I have a two piece drive shaft. After the motor mounts everything lined up perfectly. Didn't have to force anything. BTW... I thought effie said he had a 400? I prolly missed something in the thread. My attention span is about as long as... HEY Look I can win a free X-BOX!
i am gonna loosen the trans and tranfer case tonight if i can .... i am new to working on these trucks and have a lot to learn so i went all out right off the bat i guess w/ a motor swap ( i aint in mustang land any more )i have found out
you were right about the 351c vs/351m,400 mounts being different Monsterbaby
u rock
confirmed 302/251w/351c have same motor mount /frame mount
400/351m have different motor mount/frame mount than 302/251w/351c
400/351m motor mount has motor mount stud that is 1/2'' offset to rear and the
hole in the frame mount is offset to rear the same amount
the 302/251w/351c the stud is directly in the center of the motor mnt
and the hole is also in the center of the frame mount
i am shure that the frame mnts could be interchanged in some trucks if you had no other choice mine did not have anough adjustment lef in the tranny cross member
or if you wanted to modify the frame mounts cut/weld/grind/paint either way a huge pain in the @ss !!!! the motor mount would not sit square against the frame mount
and in my opinion would be trouble waitng to happen and is the half @ss way about it
thanx all !!!!!! i appreciate the info
