Have a '04 2WD V6 Explorer. A couple of weeks ago I engaged the cruise at between 30 and 35 mph, and a couple of seconds later the engine stopped dead. Started back up, repeated the sequence with same results. Odder still, it only happens when I'm going downhill! My service manager thinks I'm crazy, but I've reproduced the sequence at least 6 times now (he just hasn't been with me at the time). No TSB's that I can find with this symptom. Temporary fix has been not to hit the cruise between 30 and 35 (ha), but I'm worried that if it is an undocumented problem with the firmware or sensors someone out there could get hurt. Any ideas?
I read this post about a month ago and I also have a 04 explorer 4.0L. If I put it in cruise at 35 and go down a hill it will stall out everytime or whenever I engage cruise below 40 and hit the coast button instead of cruise automaticlly shutting off the car shuts off instead. (FORD DEALERSHIP WAS STUMPED) I told them to reflash the computer. It took three times of me telling them this and them calling their special ford hotline before they did what I told them to do and what you know it fixed it. Turns out all it is a scriptline in the vechicles computer that has a fault. So take it back to the dealer let em know whats going on and they should be able to fix it real quick. I hope this helps..
I'm shocked to find this topic. I have been searching the threads tonight to find someone with this problem. My wife brought this to my attention yesterday and I test drove it with the same results. ours is a 04 also.
what did they charge for this if you don't mind my asking? i will have to get this in and get it fixed. in the short run she will have to quit using the cruise at low speeds.
