first off, i am new here and i have never done much mechanic work. i just need some direction to get the work done myself. i need some suggestions for two complex issues i have with my 2WD 87 ranger 2.3 fuel injected 5 speed manual p/up.
1. when it was running i had issues with some sort of vibration. mostly the vibration would occur when letting off the gas (not downshifting) to go down a declining hill. the whole cab would vibrate. almost the type of vibration if you were to take off in 2nd or 3rd gear instead of 1st gear. Going back to the problem,, its not a situation where i should be down shifting..Say i might be running 55mph and simply let off the gas to reduce 5-6mph.
2. i think i have a fuel issue. someone syphened my gas out of my truck. long story short i coasted into the gas station in neutral (ran out of gas). i can not get the truck to fire now. had to pull it to the house after filling up. I turned the key to let the fuel pump run but still no fire. what are my options here.
thanks

As far as it not wanting to fire back up, are you sure the fuel pumps are running? If you ran it completely out, I would turn the key on and off about 10 times. Make sure you hear the fuel pump kick on. Then try to fire er up. Let us know what you find out! Welcome to FTE by the way!
Yeah...if they sucked it all out your pump woulda picked up all the crap that accumulates in the bottom of the tank and your fuel filter may very well be one heck of clogged up.
These guys definitly have you going in the right direction. If you have checked your filter and its fine, it could also be a weak fuel pump. Now that it has lost it's prime it may not have enough go-nads to get going again. What i've done in the past is removed the fuel cap off and put some air pressure in the tank and give it a little boost. Be very careful though because it only takes about 10psi to stretch the living Ka-Ka out of your tank. The fuel pump on a 87' should be under the driver's seat inside the frame rail to check to see if it is running. Good luck and keep in touch!
thanks for all the help. i will pull the fuel filter and try again. i had already tried turning the key a bunch of times and the pump seemed to be running. i'll let you know what i find.thanks again
There are two on my 87 2.3...a low pressure pump in the tank and another high pressure under the cab. Your filter is about 2 feet beyond the high pressure one. To save a little money look on your fuel rail and where your pressure check/fuel pressure relieve port is. There should be a cap on it like a tire cap, take it off and just stick a skinny screwdrive into the port to make gas squirt out. Make sure your engine is cold, just as a precaution. Leave your ignition on so your pumps are suppose to be up to pressure, then just releive the pressure and see how fierce it comes out of none at all. I had a similar problem with mine, except when i did this gas came out pretty slow under low pressure telling me it was the in tank pump.
so far it seems to fuel and spark.. after further investigation it seems my timing belt is slipping.. kinda strange how that happened the same time it ran out of fuel. or maybe it never did and i thought it did. i dont know> but i guess i need the timing setup now. if anybody knows that it would be great (87 2.3).thanks
It should be somewhat inscribed on the engine somehow, if that makes any sense. Usually it has some sort of indicator. I'd love to tell you more but my Haynes doesn't go back past '93.
There should be a mark on the belt guide for the camshaft and the same mark on the inner timing belt cover. With the #1 cylinder on the compression stroke the marks should line up and crankshaft should be on TDC. The intermediate shaft may have a mark also. If you have fuel injection it is more important than carbed. Should be marks on the belt guard and the same mark on the inner belt guard to match.
