I've got a 2001 Ford Ranger 4.0 litre 4x4 5spd and its making a funny squealing noise. When I let out the clutch at just about any speed it will squeal. If I let it out REAL slow, it doesn't do it as bad but still does it. Sometimes it won't make a sound, but it doesn't extremely bad if taking off up a hill. I'm thinking the clutch needs replaced, or maybe just the throw out bearing, any help?
it is probably the clutch going like you thought but while you are in there, change everything (clutch, slave, t/o bearing, pilot bearing, check pressure plate and flywheel, machine if necessary)
Well I'm debating on if I should do some clutch work here. After reading these comments and the annoying noise that doesn't sound to healthy I'm banking on doing it. Is it THAT hard to change one of these out? I wanna do it myself, but I don't wanna eff it up. lol... Also sometimes its harder than crap to get it to shift into first gear when going from a stop. Only when its warm though, if its cold its as smooth as butter. Please don't tell me I need to get a rebuild because I'm so low on cash as it is right now I don't wanna hear this (putting myself though college). Truck only has 61k and is driven like a baby, but I realize things happen. Just another list of things I have to do. Pinion seals front and rear diff, CV joint boot and still looking for a bedside to replace my bashed up one. It never ends.
it wont be hard if you take your time. change everything while you are in there. the hardest part after pulling the tranny(it isn't really hard just time consuming) will be getting the pilot bearing out but pullers are available.
and while you have the tranny out replace the bushings and washers on the shifter assembly. some people on this forum have said when they go to replace theirs, the bushings are gone. kits for the shifter assembly are available on ebay for about $40.

I don't think getting the tranny down would be a tough job, but since its a 4x4 how hard is dealing with the transfer case? One more thing, where can I get a good shop manual for this truck? I've looked around and at autoparts stores they only have manuals up to '00.
for a shop manual, go to ebay and search for "2001 Ford Ranger factory repair manual"
you want the same manual used by ford service techs not a haynes.
