Table saws

My old craftsman bench top table saw died a hard death tonight. He was ripping the rough cut 1x12x12 boards down for the roof on the new shop. He made it thru three home remodels so I can't complain.

I have been looking at the Hitachi C10FL at Lowes, anyone have one and care to make comments about it? Good or bad.

Recommendations for other saws for the same money ($500.00)are welcome also.

Thanks

Several people on one of my other newsgroups are talking about some of their local Sears store. Apparantly some of the ones that are changing to a Sears Essential, are closing out the new Sears hybred "zipcode" saws, cabinet model for around $500. So you might find out if they are changing any local Sears.

I guess the hitachi is not an opotion I went to Lowes today and the tool person told me they were on order. On the slow boat I guess from China.

Sears here I come. By the way the guy at Sears said being a member of the Craftsman club gets me about 50.00 off the price.

What went on it? Is it the motor? You could just change the motor or rebuild it. Just open it up, unwind the wire spool and count the number turns out. Buy new wire of the same type and guage, wind it back on using the same amount of turns. Change the brushes, switch etc... and you have a new motor. Or you could have a shop rebuild it for you, a shop will do that exact same thing but charge you 3 times the materials you buy to do it yourself.

If you still want to buy a new saw though, Delta makes a nice contractor grade table saw at a fair price. The only thing I've bought from craftsman is Radial Arm Saw, but I'm very satisfied with it.

Use the ridgid saw from the home cheapo for business. Very portable and sets up very easy. Saw cuts great and is pretty durable (and light) Good saw for the price. Just my $.02

Madmike is right - Sears has parts for most everything that they sold with the Craftsman name on it. May be worth reassessing before buying a new one that may not be made as well.

Looking for parts is a good idea, might get you up and running fine. Also ask if Sears has any items that are going out of the system. Employees usually ****** them up, but sometimes customers get some deals. I got my table saw for $50 down from $250 while I worked there. Ball bearing too.

I'm sure you know this, but for the benefit of anyone else who is looking for a tablesaw, really inspect it well at the store. I know that DeWalt sells a table saw for $500 but the miter gauge has more play than a $150 craftsman. The cheaper Deltas aren't all that great either. Don't trust the name, make sure it's worth the money. But that goes for all tools.

If you are looking for a bigger-than-bench top model, the Ridgid contractor-style saw has recieved the "top value" awards in a few of my wood working magazines in contractor saw comparison tests.
