Door Locks

Hey guys. New poster here, but I know you guys will have the answers.
I recently acquired a '69 F100 4x4 SWB that is great except for the door locks. The previous owner replaced the doors but neglected to retain the original door locks. This model year couldn't be locked from the outside without the key--if you push down the button and shut the door, it unlocks. My '79 F100 is handier in that you can just push the button, shut the door and it remains locked.
I have to replace the door locks anyway, so I have two questions:
1) Will later model door locks bolt in with no mods?
2) What model year did the door locks switch to the kind in my '79?

Thanks in advance for your help!

At the risk of overstating the obvious, what happens if you hold the handle when you close the door? My Dad's '69 Camaro will only stay locked if you hold the handle. (My Maxima, my 280Z, and my friend's '67 Cougar all do the same thing.) If this is the case, it is not the door lock, but the door opening mechanism that would have to be replaced. I'm not sure if those parts are interchangeable from 67-72 and 73-79.

I had a 66 mustang that would do the same thing. You couldn't lock the door and then close it, no matter what. It had new door locks, and latches along with handles. I believe that is the way it was designed. I even tried the obvious holding the button down on mine, and it wouldn't work.

The 65 F-100 I now have is the same way, if I lock the door bewfore closing it, you can't push in the button at all. And it does the same thing, lock it, close it and it unlocks.

I knoda like it that way, it keeps people from locking the keys in my truck!

You might just test try it and see what would happen. Try putting pieces of one door from the newer truck in the older truck. You should be able to test it and put it all back in an hour. :-)

Myself would take panel off and get number off of lock (passenger side) and locksmith will make a key or like I did remove locks and had them key to Ignition key so theres one key. That systems sure makes it hard to lock your keys in the truck.

Actually to be perfectly honest, it should all be one key anyway. That's factory if I'm not mistaken?

Thanks for all the help guys. I'm just going to take out the cylinders and have the local locksmith make a couple of keys (~$20). Doesn't solve the problem of only being able to lock from outside, but it'll keep me from locking my keys in it, and I shouldn't be in such a hurry that a little inconvenience would matter. After all, you don't buy a 30 year old truck for convenience. Thanks again.
