My 4.2 had been losing coolant for awhile. So,last week I had a UOA done and it showed traces of coolant in the oil.I had the original lowers replaced back in 11/2002 by my local Ford dealer. There was a calcium trail running from my lower intake, drivers side, onto the head and motor mount. I brought it back to the same Ford dealer yesterday and they replaced them, again! The Ford tech showed me where the gasket was leaking,#4 and # 6 cylinders! I was pi**ed! He said it could have gone anytime and hydrolocked! Well, they only charged me $60.00 an hour labor and $62.07 for the gasket kit. But,i'm not thru with them yet; they owe me for this job due to them (the Ford tech) and/ or the gaskets failing! Anyway,i'll keep ya'll posted.BTW,if you are losing coolant, get a UOA done and look at the lower intake to head area to see if there is a calcium trail forming! It looks like a white ash substance.

hi, what is a UOA test. at 180k i replaced all gaskets with felpro gaskets when undertaking a full rebuild due to coolant/gasket failure. i have run up approx another 12k and todate everything is ok. is there any way i can find out if this truck has ever had gasket failure prior to me owning it. i have no documents other than its vin number and my country's registration mark.
watching the coolant level constantly and crossing your fingers seems to be part of owning a 1997, unfortunately.
UOA- used oil analysis. Its when you take a sample of your oil and have it analyzed to tell the engines internal condition. In my case,I was losing about a quart of coolant every 3-4 months and the analysis discovered it.
