i have 2004 f150 5.4 engine has anyone changed the fuel filter? if so what kind of tool do i need, truck has 33,000 miles on it. thanks for the help guys.
I've got a filter in my hot little grubbies right now. I'm going to hold off on commenting untill I actually do it, because the filter appears to be different than the 97-03 trucks, and have reverted back to the way Ford used to have it's fuel filters taken off and on.
I'll try to make it a quasi Tech article if the filter I have is the correct one.
Replacing the filter is really easy if you have the right tool. Just go to your local AutoZone or favorite parts place and tell them you need a fuel filter tool for your truck. They'll give you this funny looking tool that has two differently sized ends; I want to say one was 5/16" and the other 3/8".
Basically it is a tool that that rotates around the middle and at has cupped shaped ends that you put over your fuel filter ends that slide into the fuel line couplers.
To get the filter off, all you do is slide the tool into the coupling and it releases the mechanism that clamps onto the filter (it's a star washer shaped thing inside the coupler).
It's really simple to do and the only mess you'll have is from the fuel that runs out of the filter. I've never had the lines drain out or any sort of pressure when I've replaced mine.
