FORD 460 semi-hemispherical head

I've heard about a super powerfull, semi-hemispherical, 460 motor, that was offered in 69 Lincoln Towncars.
Rumor has it the motor had over 400 hp stock, and they can be had for cheap in boneyards.
Any truth to this, or is it some old Ford guy's pipe dream?

could it be the MEL 462? not a semi-hemi, but still a fairly efficient combustion design as all the explosion is on the piston face sine there is little/no quench in the head itself.

impossible!, the 462 was not offered in the 1969 model year only the 460. the 462 was last offered in the years before 1968. starting in '68 the 460 was introduced with 360 h.p. with closed chamber heads nothing outstanding but did have 10:5.1 compression.

FORD 460 semi-hemispherical head

Sounds like the old Ford guy’s memory is fading (give me a few years and I’ll be right there with him!) The only “semi-hemi” in the 385 series was the Boss 429 with the crescent heads but they only appeared in the ‘69 1/2 and ’70 Stangs. The 462 Lincoln engine was slated to be dropped after ’67 but there was an overrun of engines so they used them up in the beginning of ‘68 along side of the newly introduced 460. ’68 was an interesting year, you could get a 427, a 428 or a 429. Why not see what the guys on the 385 series board have to say.

FORD 460 semi-hemispherical head

Some Ford advertizing in the late 60s refered to the 429/460, and the Boss 302 and the cleveland series as 'semi-hemispherical' to show how they were different from previous in line valve wedge designs. Later these were called 'polyangle' combustion chambers. The Boss 429 really was a hemi, usually it was made with a chamber shape and piston dome that led it to be refered to as a cresent-hemi, or quench-hemi, these were only sold in mustangs or as crate engines. The engine you old friend is thinking of may be a 68 429 Thunderjet, it would have been available in the linc, and would have enough power, and may have been advertized as a semi-hemi. DF
