Exclamation Glow plugs

Once again i have a question about stupid glow plugs! What are some indications that the glow plugs are bad? Also when using a test light on them you hook the light to the positive battery terminal and then to the spade connector on the glow plug? does anything have to be connected to the negative or no?

sings of bad glowplugs, hard starting, short glowplug cycle timeing, excessive smoke at startup. to test clip test light to positive terminal and remove wire from glowplug and tuch the connector on the glowplug. good ones will light bad ones will not. nothing goes on the negative terminal on the batt.good glowplugs are grounded thats why the test light lights up. if you use a ohmmeter then you are mesuring the restance of ground. one lead from the meter to a good ground and the other lead to the glow plug good plugs will be 2 ohms or less.

With test light clip connected to the +ve on the battery and then touching the spade of the plug with the light you are in fact checking whether the plug is connected to ground by trying to connect the test light to ground.

A good plug will provide a path to ground and the test light will light up. (or little resistance will show on the Ohmeter if you are using an Ohmeter)

A bad plug will not provide a path to ground and the test light will not light up or light up very dim. (or lots of resistance will show on the Ohmeter if you are using an Ohmeter)

Most plugs I have ever seen are either good or bad, The test light will come on or not.

ok i did that but wasnt sure, seems that all are out, it still starts but it takes about 10 cranks or so

Bass pro they are still in the engine right.....because that is the ground for the GP.

Did not mean to suggest you were, just upper posts did not specify the block was the ground except 1....... sorry.

ohh its cool, what would a glowplug do if it were out of the engine and ignition turned??? dont feel like trying it, just curious to know what happens, id figure they get red hot or sumthing but im not sure.

if you held it in the air nothing would happen but if you make a jumper from the threds to ground then you would burn your hand that woulent be cool

What is an indication of bad glow plugs on the late model system with the short cycle times does not happen on the old style system. It is controlled by a timer and a coolant temp sensor. When the first glow plug burns out it just sends more juice to the ones left. That decreases the time they will last. By the time four are burnt out the rest are getting twice as hot as they should. No wonder they are all burnt out.

Also bassproguy07, be careful about lots of cranking the engine. Starters don't like to do that very long. 15 seconds cranking 2 minutes cool down time minimum.

thats what ive been doing...i count to 15 and let it sit, then count to 15 again, i started just plugging the truck in so itll start right up, Im 17 and its not really my truck so i have no say so in getting it fixed, when my dad feels its needed wich he wont trust me, then ill get them replaced. Hes been putting it off for about a week tellng me we'll get it done but i have yet to see him go to the parts store to buy the plugs. When i do change them what are some things i will need to do? someone in a previous post said spray the engine with something to get all the dirt out then blow it off with an air hose? what is the stuff you use and why is it needed?

blow out the webing around the glow plug with air. then spray the glow plug with a good penatrating oil, like pb blaster.let it sit a bit, them loosen the plug. before you pull the plug out, blow it off again to make sure nothing falls down the hole. this helps lubricate the threads on the plug and block to get the plug out. then before you put the new plug in, put a dab of never-sieve on the threads.

I sympathize with you, my dad is a stuborn goat too when it comes to glowplugs; althought I am 38 now and he is 66 so he does listen to me once in a while. He still will not spent the money on all new plugs and every month changes another plugs that burns out on his 92 F250.

Maybe its time for you to head to Autozone and pick up eight new plugs and impress him with everything you learned on this forum about glow plugs.

Be sure you don't buy autolite brand either. You can really impress him when you bring home the good motorcraft ones. Autolites so I've heard are junk and can cause alot of problems down the road. Particularly when changing them I guess. I never took the chance and just bought motorcraft like everyone here says too...

good news guys, i showed my dad the thread and previous ones and hes finally positive it it the glow plugs so im off to get a new set right now!! Oh and the ones in there i took a few out and they are not BERU or Motorcraft so im just hoping i dnt get one with a swollen tip on it.
