What rearend can I use in my 86 4X4. it is just about gone and I need a new on soon but from what years will work. will it have to come out of another 4X4 or can i get one out of a 2X4 truck, and what years will interchange.??
f150... 8.8inch, possibly 9 inch rear
f250-f350.... ford sterling, possibly dana 60
first rear is what i think ya have, second listed is possible. i've seen 86's with both of them, if i recall, 86 was transition year. no diff in perch width between 2 or 4x4, just make sure gearing matches the front axle otherwise you get to join the tick tick snap club.
not that i'm disagreeing, but how do you know your rearend is about to go? unless you have a good relationship with your junkyard, it'd probably be cheapest to just replace you ring and pinion set. even if you get a cheap one off a u-pull, you'll most likely have to replace other parts (brakes, etc.). i would understand if you wanted to upgrade to a heavier duty axle, but why do you want to replace it right now?
the rear it making a grinding klanging sound then just moves free then grabs hold so it is coming apart i was told it my have striped axle spline. so what ever it is I am just going to replace it.
