Clunk in driveline

I have a 01 F150 Supercrew. The truck has the automatic, 4x4 (electronic shift), and the 8.8 rear end. It has 150000 miles.

There is a clunk in the driveline (sounds like rearend) when I start out quickly or if I coast at about 40 MPH then get on it it will clunk. It has been there now for about 2 years. It doesn't make any other noise. No howl, nothing. I replaced both u-joionts and it still makes the noise. When I jacked it up, it seemed like there was quite a bit of play in the rear end, but we couldn't get it to make the sound.

When I change the rear diff fluid about 5 months ago there was some metal in the rearend, but nothing seemed visibly wrong. I found nothing in the tranny and transfer case as far as metal shavings go.

I don't notice any noise going in reverse.

It still makes the sound in 4wd as well.

Two different guys have told me just to keep driving it till the rearend goes out, but it is driving me nuts.

What does it take to rebuild the rearend on these trucks. Am I better off just getting a used on from the wreckers? Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I have the same problem and I think it is the center support bearing. The rubber around mine has deteriorated and I think the shaft is bumping the carrier when it has a load applied to it. I just picked up the bearing at NAPA. My only problem is, I don't know how hard it will be to get the old one off and the new one on. I'd like to do it without going to a machine shop.

Mine is a single shaft. Not sure how you would put on the new one.

it is more than likley play in the gear set. automatic trans make play mor noticible than manual trans. my old ford always clunked when put in reverse and sometimes when put into drive. some tinny metal flakes are normal to find in the oil during changes .
