I was wondering if anyone had any information about camping facilities for the NASCAR race at the Talladega Raceway in October. Not neccessarily have to be in the infield, but a the track facility on the property would be nice though. Anyone ever done it before? How was it, was it easy, it is recommended, etc.
I can't help you with talladega, but when we went to Bristol,I looked up the bristol track website on nascar.com,and they had links on their website to places to camp and how close to the track they were, might give that a try. I would be willing to bet most of the camping spots on the grounds of the track are already booked. that's the way it was for Bristol. We were camping in a campground about 1/4 mile away from the camprground, and caught a shuttle to the track and back,so we didn't fight traffic at all!!..and we could drink as much as we wanted and not have to worry about driving anywhere . we just got our lawn chairs, set them up in front of the tent, started the fire, popped the top on a few more cold ones, and watched the big dummies get in the line that went for miles trying to leave then we woke up at 5 the next morning, packed up,and were on the start of the 12 hour trip that would end at my house...and we were just about the only ones awake in Bristol....no traffic
We camped on track property there at the spring race a few years ago. Had to have reservations I think. No hook-ups, but water and pump trucks came by at least once a day. I think there is a dump station and bath houses, but you might have to walk a long way to get there. Folks that camped with us rented a private port-o-john and had it delivered right to the camp sight. Better take everything you need because there's not too many places to get food or beer.
I'll be headin' back to Watkins Glen this summer. The track is a road course so the entire outside is camping facilities. Some of the camp sites back up to the track so you can watch the race right from your site. It also turns out to be a nice deal with races Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Talladega is a big track and has some campgrounds. I'm sure the camp grounds are already booked. The track is located in the middle of no where in a big field. If your self contained you can just park in the parking area(s)/fields and camp out.
It's been a few years since I have gone to Talladega but we just parked and pitched a tent.
I'm not going back unless I have a RV or Camper. Traffic is ****. Stay till Monday.
The last time I went to Talladega it took me longer to get to Birmingham (30-40 miles) than it took NASCAR to drive 500 miles. (4 plus hours to get out of the parking area to Birmingham)
The infield at Talladega is the worst place to watch a race. I did it one time and never again. Great party, starts about 7:00 am but not the place to be if you want to see the race. Now if you want to see some boobies the infields the place to be.

Wonder what track is the best over-all to go camping at?
Depends on what you like and don't like. I figure every track has loud and quiet camping areas, crowded and not so crowded. I can't stand getting wedged in a 15' wide slip with barely enough room to put an awning out. I need my sleep too so I pefer a quieter area a night. I now go to Martinsville every spring and fall race. We camp about 200-300 yards from the turn 1 gate and have all the room we need. Plenty of fun during the day, but everyone settles down at night.

I've camped in a tent at Darlington, Bristol, and Charlotte. Bristol has a ton of camping -- those 160,000 people need to come from somewhere since the track is in the middle of nowhere. Darlington wasn't bad, camped a little bit outside of turn 4. They came around with ice and a free paper every morning. Charlotte was one of the better places. Camped right on speedway property, and they had shuttle buses to take you to the track.

Did you have to make reservations or just show up with your camper?
Around the Martinsville track there are three areas to consider camping; on track property on the back stretch side of the track which requires reservations, privately owned land between Hwy 220 and the front of the track along Speedway Rd and Brass Shop Rd, which doesn't require reservations but many spots are reserved by regulars or privately owned land along Hwy 220 and Hwy 58 within a mile of the track which doesn't require reservations. We camp near the very end of Brass Shop Rd which is right outside turn 1. You can usually just show up with a camper and find a spot. Of course, I've seen folks drive all the way down to the end and not find a spot they liked and have to turn they're rig around and leave. Not easy because it's a narrow street lined with houses, campers parked right next to the street and very little room to get turned around. If you park along Speedway Rd or Brass Shop Rd, just don't expect to get out right after the race. It takes a few hours for traffic to thin out. Also, level ground is scarce, so bring lots of leveling bocks.
