I just started my 1994 7.3 and noticed it was running rough.. pulled the dipstick and it was milky oil. I also noticed a tick tick on the passenger side .. so i am assuming i have a blown head gasket over there. This truck gets driven about once a week and i'm down south where it could not have frozen.. I'd be interested in hearing form somone who has pulled the heads of his engine. anything i Should be aware of?? I'm a pretty good shade tree mechanic About how many hours should this take???.I suppose i will need some sort of lifiting device to pick them up ???.. any input is appreciated.. Lars
Engine was Hydrolocked too.. I thought it was my starter solenoid acting up again and keept cranking like an idiot.. it started after the 3rd or 4th try..could that cylinder fill up with coolant from just a broken head gasket or do i have bigger problems.. that little tick sounds like a lifter but is definetly a new noise
Sorry to say but yours sounds like Cavitation........major overhaul time. Have you been using SCAs in the coolant as required. Don't try cranking it over any more or you may bend a rod.
Head gasket, cracked block, cracked head, or cavitation are all possibilities.
Head gasket would be the cheapest one to fix.
Cracked block or cavitation would be the most expensive to fix, probably looking at a different motor to fix either one.
Shop guide for time has R&R heads at 22 hours in the truck.
I have found it is faster to pull the engine before tearing it apart.
Plus it is a lot easier to work on it standing on the floor.
I was afraid it may be worse than head gaskets.. this was and abrupt failure i hadn't noticed anything amiss with the truck when i shut it down last week.. i don't really need the truck for towing anymore and i may just let someone else have this problem.. thanks for the help
