Possible Boost Leak

On my PSD, the large Y-Pipe on top of the engine is very oily around the turbo boots. Not fresh oil, but that black tarry sludgy oil. Never have washed the engine, but the crap seems to be thicker on side of manifold then the other. Could this be blowby/exhast being forced past the turbo boots?

no, that is because the closed system Crankcase Ventilation system is directed in the air intake. the only part that is below atmospheric pressure that can suck the gasses out of the crankcase is pre-turbo, and the oil is run through the turbo and all the piping. simple fix is the CCV mod, and take all the intake parts out and clean them inside and out. the oil makes everything slippery and boots CAN blow off eventually. meanwhile, pull the boots off and clean them and tighten the hose clamps down TIGHT!

Boots

Okay, will have a look inside the manifold. Anything else that could be spraying oily crap right where the boots join the Y?

It's possible that an external source is spraying on the boots, but unlikely.

Pull the intake tubing off from the filter back and look at the crankcase vent connector fitting and down in the turbo inlet. You'll see the same old cruddy looking oil in there as you're seeing on the ouside of the boots. It's being pushed through the turbo and collecting on the boots. You'll also find the same oil on the connections at the intercooler and the orange boots feeding the engine intakes.

Just be careful not to over tighten the clamps, especially on the intercooler connection pipes. When I took mine off last week, I notices one of them had been deformed and was no longer completely round. I assume this is from overtightening the clamps. Did I do it, possibly, I don't know for sure. I guess it's a good thing I've got new ones ready to go back on the truck when my turbo mods are ready and I can put everything back together.

I think that is where it was coming from, the clamps each tightened up about 3 turns before the springs bottomed out. It sounds different, so I'm sure that it was at least a problem.
