Driving home I noticed a slight grinding noise at the front axle on my 71 F-100 4x4.I stopped and found the hub was warm to the touch and figured the bearing was going bad.I figured the 4 miles home wasn't going to do any more harm until a real loud grinding noise started.I pulled over as soon as I could get out of traffic and found the hub was really hot. So I tried to turn around and park it out of the way but the front wheel fell off right there. After a tow home I found that the inner spindle nut had a sheared off lock pin, this allowed the spoidle nuts to back off.The outer bearing had exploded its parts and caused the outer spindle nut to bust into two peices. The outer race had spun and egged out the inside of the hub itself so that part is no longer usable. The inner part of the front bearing had welded itself to the spindle leaving the spindle not usable either. The brake shoes and retainers were wiped out when they hit the ground but the backing plate survived. All this happened because I either over or under torqued the spindle nuts that caused the nut pin to shear off.Suprisingly the hub locks made it with no damaged parts.I will now always torque these nuts as per spec to cause less embarassment in the future.Any body know where I can find a new or used hub and spindlefor this truck? Thanks
