I wondered if anyone could give me some advice on a 05-6.0 PSD . I have been traveling from Canada to Florida this past week and the trip has been going just fine until yesterday. I started in Kentucky yesterday and made it to Lenox, GA when I needed fuel. I pulled in to the BP and filled the tank. Got back in to continue the trip and the truck would not fire up. Motor cranked just fine, but not a hint of starting. Truck was running fine until that time. It was hauled to Tifton on a flatbed & is now waiting on Monday for the dealer to open. If anyone has any suggestions as to what might have happened I would appreciate it. I really would like to get back on the road. Thanks for any help & great site, I have been lurking for a couple of weeks.
2005 High Pressure Oil System Leak:
Some 2005 SuperDuties and Excursions built after 1-10-05 may experience symptoms related to high pressure oil system leakage, most commonly a hard/no start when the engine is warm. If diagnosis indicates a leak at the HP oil pump, inspect the pump quick connect fitting. If the leak is at the fitting o-ring, replace the fitting with P/N W301727. Broadcast Message 4320, 4932.
2005 Trucks, Crank/No Start, Hard Start, Runs Runs Rough at Idle:
Pickups and vans built before 4-15-05 and Excursions built between 1-10 and 4-15-05 may exhibit hard or no start conditions with a low ICP signal, or a rough idle with a high ICP signal. This may be due to a damaged high pressure oil pump and/or IPR valve. The IPR valve should be removed (mounted on HPP cover under the turbo) and inspected for a damaged inlet screen or debris on over half the screen. If either condition is present, the IPR (5C3Z-9C968-CA) and the high pressure oil pump (5C3Z-9A543-AA) should be replaced, along with the oil and oil filter. If neither condition is present, continue with normal diagnosis. If a rough idle is present after replacing the above parts, injector damage may have occured.
TSB 50-12-3.
did it start at all after you got fuel ? was it running while you got fuel ?
if it was off and would not start than sounds like the thread above, but if it ran after you got fuel, or was running while you got fuel then it might be you got bad fuel? good luck, lets us know what you find it to be.
The technition will have to check and see what went wrong. A cut or damaged O-ring with loss of oil pressure up to a wiring issue can cause a no start.
Engine was shut off during fuel-up. It was running fine prior to fueling up. would not fire up after fueling. I checked the fuel shutoff switch and it did not seem to help. Thanks for the suggestions I guess tomorrow will tell.
I have an '05 with a build date (04/17/05) right at the time of the issue dates of TBSes listed above by KW. I wonder if mine is a ticking time bomb waiting to fail when I am on the road someplace. Let us know what it is.
The TSB that KW indicated above sounds familiar with what happened with a brand new Fire Engine I was driving a few years back. It was an International engine and had the high pressure oil fired injector technology as shown. What it turned out to be on that one was a check valve in the high pressure oil pump, where the pressure had bled off affecting the firing of the injectors. (faulty check valve) No oil pressure, no fuel.
Don't know if this International engine would be the same as the Navistar engines in the SD's but thought I would throw that out there.
I agree, Tifton is a great place and the people are very friendly. I am just keeping my fingers crossed that the dealership has a good diesel tech. I will be waiting at the service dept door for them to open in the morning. Thanks everyone, I'll let you know what they found ASAP.
Make sure they check your fuel. I knew someone with an Excursion who stopped to get fuel. Truck was running fine until the fuel stop. Last time it ran. Turned out the diesel pump was pumping out regular gas and not diesel! I thought the truck would have run a few seconds until diluted fuel reached the injectors but was told it never hit a lick after the fuel stop.
Wow, this is freaky. I was stranded in Tifton last October with a drive shaft failure on my Ex. I just picked it up in FLA and was headed back up north on I75, when the truck began to shudder violently at 75mph. Turned out one of the retainer clips for the front U joint either left the groove or was'nt installed in the first place upon assembly and the shaft slipped sideways, reaming out the trans tailpiece. The truck had <500 miles on it.
Say hi to Steve, the service manager at Griffin Ford there in Tifton. They took good care of me. They're good folks down there and I'm sure they'll fix you up!
Finally made it to FL. Monday at 6:30PM, Sitting at old town having a cold one by 6:35.
Yes, Steve at Griffin Ford did take good care of us, they told me it was probably either the high pressure oil pump or the high pressure regulator ?? the latter being the quickest to repair, so they order the regulator from Tallahasee and said if that was the problem they would have it fixed by early afternoon. I checked at 1:00 and the part had not arrived yet. I then started searching for a rental and put one on hold for 2:30 just in case. The rental & a phone call from Steve arrived at the Motel at the same time. I was very happy to hear Steve say to come pick up my truck, the rental person wasn't as happy to hearme say that I didn't need their car !!! Steve at Griffin Ford said that my truck pulled 3 more codes and I needed to get it in for service when I returned to Canada, but he said they should not cause any problems for now.
I HOPE NOT !!!!!!!
