You didn't say what year but I would suspect a DPFE sensor.

oops It's a 99. Is there any way to do a resistance or ohm check to see if it is bad

Thanx I'll get my butt out there in the morning and chek it. I was gettin worried cuz they have a tendincy to make that kind of stuff solid state which you can not test

DPFE and possible EGR
Yes, agree with the above 100 percent. Had a P0401 code last month. I replaced the DPFE on my 99 2.5 Ranger after the voltage test showed it was bad. Also, as I had 82000 miles, replaced the EGR to be on the safe side. Also, when you replace the DPFE, blow some compressed air to clear out any crud in the two exhaust hose connections. Works like a champ!

The test says to leave the harness plugged in for the test. How are you to get a reading unless you stick a pin through the harness to attach to?

A lot of DVM probes are sharp enough to make contact through the wire insulation.
