the rubber motor and transmission mounts for my 78 ranger are wore out completly and have to be replaced. i was told my best bet would be solid mounts because the truck is primarily for off road and weekend use. i need to know any drawbacks to the solid mounts and any other factors i'm over looking
drawbacks are if the engine's rotating assembly is not prefectly balanced they transfer a lot of vibrations. Also I have heard of problems with the mounts or bolts breaking when using solid motor mounts with a transfercase that uses a torque arm. With 4 mounting points there needs to be some rubber cusshion in there so the frame can flex. With solid motor mounts and rubber transmission and torque arm bushings you would probably be OK
Another appraoch would be to chain the drivers side of the motor down to prevent the motor from over twisting and pulling the mount apart.
Thats another cheap yet effective way to do it.
It would also be a good idea to put a chain on the passenger side because 4 wheel drive trucks tend to be put under the same load while in reverse too.
There is two 1/2" bolt holes on the back of each head that would be a great place to mount a bracket to. Fab up something out of .25" or .375" plate that you can bolt on there and mount a chain or a turnbuckle too, then put the other end on the frame rail.
