the rubber motor and transmission mounts for my 78 ranger are wore out completly and have to be replaced. i was told my best bet would be solid mounts because the truck is primarily for off road and weekend use. i need to know any drawbacks to the solid mounts and any other factors i'm over looking
Solid mounts transmit a lot of vibration from the engine to the frame. It's really something that you want to reserve for race-only vehicles. I was considering doing this in my truck with the new engine and was advised by someone who runs solid mounts that it wasn't the best choice for a weekend wheeler. I'm going to be revamping my mounts a but and replacing the rubber with poly chunks to help absorb a bit of that vibration but not break down so quickly under heavy torque.
FWIW if you don't have a wild amount of horsepower a replacement set of rubber mounts will do the trick fine and should last another 10-15 years. They really don't break down fast unless they're being beaten on.
You didn't state what motor you're using, if it's a 460 than the link below is a bullet proof mount: http://performanceunlimited.com/cust...ginemount.html
If you're application requires a solid mount I can e-mail you the address of someone who makes an excellent solid (460) mount for a good price. As warned, this will provide loads of vibration through your frame, unless you're just mud bog racing for short runs your better off with the other style.
i tried solid mounts in my dually with the 428SCJ,it was the worst feeling, and sounding for riding in i ever experienced.i took them out the next week end.-billy
