Yeah, those were worse off than newer ones.. they changed the tensioner design, and the "cassette" (chain guides) designs around late 2001, and there are some (like me) that have had minor issues with 2002 models... I think they changed the materials used as the contact area from some polymer to a type of nylon, and I (think, not sure) think they may have worked on the tolerances on the tensioners. All's I know is that everyone I've run across with 2001-2002 models that have had this problem, a good oil fixes it. I've always changed my oil every 4000 miles regardless of what kind it is.. interesting thing is, the problem IMMEDIATELY reappeared on my truck after the dealer performed a "regular" oil change, while I had it in for other service. I took it home, and a week later, changed back to Mobil 1, voila, noise gone. For those others that try this and fail, it means one of two things: 1) Your tensioners / cassettes are "gone", and will need replacement (letting it "eat" is not a good idea.. the pieces of plastic, and eventually metal, can clog up the oil filter, or in severe cases, the pickup screen, and the bypass may open and chunks of "crud" will end up in your bearings=="Exploded" motor).. or 2) You have "spark knock," which can be remedied by a good diagnosis and repair (this is often caused by carbon in the combustion chambers; Ford has a TSB out on how to fix this on all their engines, pretty easy to do).
Okay my problem is with an 02 explorer 4.0l SOHC and I have changed over to mobil 1 and it still rattles @2400rpm on a cold engine. Also I have tested it on a hill and held the rpms@2400 and not only do I hear the rattle but I can feel knocking or grinding with my feet. So if i ever wanted to tow I would be up a tree! Anyone know what that is and how bad that is??? I am assuming I have this timing chain problem and I have an appointment with a ford dealer in two days so I am wonder if anyone can help me as in what is the warranty and how do I go about getting them to pay for it>>???????
3 years or 36,oo miles was the warranty. You have a 5 year old vehicle and they may make some nosie. Not sure why you would be trying to figure out how to "go about getting them to pay for it".
On here i was reading that the warranty was extended to 100 000miles and in canada 170 000 kms???? I want to know if anyone has had this done or any info would be nice,. Just thought someone might have something positive to tell me?
