I just got a 99 F150 XLT 4x4 4.6L, really really nice truck, especially for its year model. I was just wondering if this year truck had any recalls I should be aware of or any flaws that will eventually cost me some money. I know some trucks had a problem with the cruise control, and something about the wires on it would get corroded and cause a possibility of a fire? Anything else I should be aware of? Thanks for any help
i just got a 99 F150 XLT 4x4 also (5.4L), and i looked up the recalls and came up with this link: link... scroll down a little bit and you'll see the recall info.
1. Door cracks and lower door/tailgate rust. Do a search and you'll see where and how to fix. Not really a DIY job
2. Digital odometer fades in and out or quits altogether. Quick DIY fix. Do a search here too.
3. Turn signal or other multifunction switch failure. Wires or connector pulls free in the steering column of tilt wheel models. Easy DIY fix.
4. Upper (especially) and lower ball joints wear out. Can be a DIY, but is often more than some people want to play with. Also need an alignment.
5. Tie rod ends wear out or fail. Easy DIY, but will need alignment.
6. Temperature Control **** on the Heat/AC panel cracks and even though it looks fine externally, it will let the temp control stick in one place. Usually full hot or full cold. Easy DIY fix.
7. Spark plug blow out. Usually only happens to 5.4's and V10's, but there are a few cases of it on 4.6's. Very expensive fix if taken to the dealer. Can be fixed on the vehicle if you're so inclined, but probably better to left to someone who has done it before to fix it or it can be DIY if you are VERY mechanically inclined.
8. Brake master cylinder switch internal seal failure. The seal fails allowing brake fluid into the switch connector. Pretty low chance of failure. Even lower chance that it will catch fire. Check it when you check/change your oil. If it's dry inside, it's good. If it bothers you that it could happen, put a fuse inline with it. That's primarily what the factory fix is. It is a recall so factory fix should be free, but you might not have a working cruise when they're done.
That's about all I recall at the moment. Door cracks are probably the most common deal followed by ball joints and rod ends. Plug blow out is a minute fraction of a percent probability. You probably have a higher chance hitting a telephone pole and destroying your new beauty than plug blow out or cruise control fire.

LMAO, man o man, don't know if I should be laughing at this or not, before this truck I had a 02 XL F150 that was charcoal, ahh wat a flawless truck, I hit some ice about a month ago, ran into a major gas line, and into the front porch of a house, needless to say the truck was totalled....so I guess you would be right!lol Anyways, i'm gonna check out all of the things ya'll have told me and i appreciate the help, thanks
They're great trucks really. My 99 5.4 XLT 4x2 has 152k miles. The TPS and rear ABS sensors have gone bad. I had the above listed turn signal and tilt wheel issue, the odometer issue (which were both easily fixed) and the door crack which is so tiny that I just don't have a problem with it. But that's it. Fuel, oil, tires, brakes, filters is all it's need so far.
Newbie here - I have that odometer problem on the 99 XLT Supercab that I just bought. Is it loose behing the cluster or something? What is it that needs to be fixed?
