I have an 1990 ford ranger and it just stoped wprking.
I was driving and and about 1 mile into my drive it shut off. It started a cupple of times giving it gas and it keep surging and died. After a cupple of mints it was ok and worked the whole way home which was 30 miles. Sines then it wont idle. All it will do is start and stop or start surge and stop. I changed the wirers and plugh 4 months ago so i rules thme out. ( plus I made it home ok?) The coil checked out ok. So i changed the idle control valve and intake air temp sensor and it still wont work. I even dissoncted the o2 sensor to rule that out as well. Has anyone hade a simillar problem please help me its my daley driver.
For a problem like this I would start by testing the fuel pressure and pulling the codes. I have a link on pulling the eec-iv codes in the tech i nfo thread at the top of this forum.
I donot have a fule pressure guage but i did disconected the fule fine going into the fule rail and it was poring out when the pump was on, but when i push down on the valve where a guage would go not puch presure came out?
If you pressed the valve on the fuel rail after turning the key on/off a few times and the fuel didn't squirt out in a strong spray you probably have a fuel pressure problem.
Hey i got a question and am not smart enough to figure out how to post my own one of these so i'll just post it here since its also about idling. My 1990 Ranger 4.0L will idle high sometimes, i mean it will like shoot up to 4000rpms almost like i am reving the engine. It doesnt do it always only about half the time, any ideas on what it could be or how i could fix it? Also, any ideas how to give my truck more power??, she seems to accelerate slower than she should.
