Hello is there anyway to tell what kind of axle is on a given truck. I'm thinking of going to the wreckers and looking for some decent heavy duty axles.

Yes Matt, there is, but since you don't want us to know about your truck, no one can advise.

Yes, a couple of things to look for, most 100/150's will have either 9" or 8.8" rears and Dana 44's up front (although it is possible to find a Dana 44 in the rear of some 100's). These will also have 5 on 5 1/2" lug pattern. These would be considered "light" duty. Although, I wouldn't exactly call a 9" "light" duty. In some of the 250's, they used a Dana 44 up front, but in a heavier duty varient or used a Dana 50 with the IFS. These have an 8 bolt lug pattern, and use a Dana 60 in the rear. Most if not all of these are the full floating design, the axle is not supporting the weight of the truck like in a 9" or 8.8". If you have access to a PAW cat., they have pictures of the diff covers that will help I.D. these. The Dana's usually have the model # cast into the webbing around the pumpkin. The heavier duty 250's and 350's use a Dana 60 in the front, while the 350's use a Dana 70 in the rear. This applies to most of the older trucks, in the newer, they also have a Sterling 10.25" in the rear with the Dana up front-that refers to the ring gear size just like 9" or 8.8". There are a few different varients of the Dana's like the 60 and the 61, 60-2 and 61-2 depending on full-time or part-time t-case. Hope this helps get you started in you search. Maybe someone can pick-up anything or easy I.D. tips that I may not know or might have missed!

The 9" is easy to identify since it has a non removeable rear cover and a removable 3rd member. The Dana 60 rear is easy as well as the 8 lugs and the large hub in the middle of the brake drum. This is actually the end of the axle since it's a full floater. The Dana 44 front looks similar to the Dana 60 but much smaller in every aspect. The axle tubes, U-joints, and diff. cover are considerable larger on a 60. Hope this helps a little

Engine Stats

I recently purchase a 1974 Ford F250 "Highboy". The powerplant is a 390 taken out of a 65 TBird. The motor has been tweaked with a 270 comp cam, bored 30 over and has a Malory Electronic Ignition plus other little extras.

Below is a list of questions to begin with. I will certainly have more as I dig into this nifty project.

What is the normal operating temp for this type of motor?
What should the oil pressure ie average
What size thermostat should be used

Welcome to the site tc390:

You have dug up a post that is 8 years old, and long been dead.
There is a far better chance that you will recieve some replies to your questions if you introduce yousrself, and ask the quastion in a new thread. Most folks will reply to a new thread before that respond in a thread that is this old, and does not pertain to the questions that you asked.
Perhaps start with a topic that has a title that describes your thread, ask your questions, and I believe that you will get some bites on your questions.

Good luck, and again welcome............
